Exposure to creative materials gets children's imaginations rolling, so having a Lego Brick Wall in the library will give children the opportunity to build, explore, create and socialize. This wall will allow several children to work at the same time. Lego brick building promotes fine motor skills, develops problem solving skills, encourages teamwork and gives the opportunity for lateral thinking. At our school, numerous children have the opportunity to develop those skills, as they never had any Lego sets. My goal is to provide a section of our Maker-spaces in the library, to have children come (alone or in groups) to play, build and explore. The wall provides the space for children to work on structures, practice their mathematical skills, have no limitations to explore their creativity, and be proud of their constructions. As students arrive to the wall and begin planning, they will have the freedom to play without fear of failure, and if they encounter a glitch, they can retrace their steps, re-evaluate their work and figure out what needs fixing. The work will be left on the wall for few days and students can have the opportunity to show it to their teacher and their peers. As it would be expected, students must independently set up and clean up the area they used, except for what was made on the wall. In this way, the Lego area will be ready for the next group. By donating to our Lego Brick Wall project, you will help increase problem solving skills, self-esteem and lateral thinking. These will increase our student’s academic achievement in the long run.
