For many of my students, the middle school art room is the first opportunity to creatively use and manipulate construction tools and fibers. The skills they will practice are applicable in many engineering, practical consumer science, and creative problem solving situations. Often, students who feel they lack creativity find they are wildly innovative when presented with a new media or tool. Because many of my students have never used a hammer or a soldering iron, the powerful art of "making and making do" is invigorated and enhanced when they are exposed to these and tools for tackling real-world problems. The visual arts aspect of our curriculum ensures that fixes, inventions, and innovations are aesthetically pleasing and a source of pride for my students.
