Many of my students have not yet come to realize how Social Studies and U.S. history directly relates to their lives every day. I remember when I was an 8th grader, I had not yet grasped the inextricable link between education and opportunity. This is especially true for those from low-income less resources backgrounds. In contributing to this project, you will help my students access books that could ignite the spark that sets their life's path. I know for me, that is what happened when my 8th grade Social studies teacher introduced me to books like "A Young People's History of the United States," "I am Malala," and "More than Gone." Currently, my students do not have novels that can be built into their curriculum. Their other classes have also moved away from book-studies. In helping to create a classroom library, these students could wind up reading an exponential amount more books this year than they would have otherwise.
