Imagine if the only books available to read were about characters that looked nothing like you. Or if the stories seemed more like fantasy than the reality of your home life. Now, imagine hanging on the edge of your seat to find out what happens to a character that is like you, doing something you can imagine doing. This connection is powerful in driving students' desire to learn to read. Even more engaging is finding that you too, can write your own story for an audience by studying how the book's author brought a story to life! These books will inspire students to learn to read and give them role models for guiding their writing. The reading writing connection is documented as making a huge difference in student achievement. Adding these books to our library will provide students with rich stories of people who they can understand and identify with. These books will also guide instruction in exploration of author's craft as mentor texts. Students will make discoveries in these books that they can then experiment with in their own writing to find that they have a voice to share their stories. This can be life-changing!
