Using a variety of formats to introduce my students to non-fiction texts will help build their love for topics in science, social studies, current events, and the arts. Students will receive a weekly mini-magazine from “Time for Kids.” This will be used for lessons in class, but the students will get to take their magazine home to share with family members. Teaching with good works of fiction is easy for a teacher, but gaining interest for non-fiction reading pieces takes a little more skill and planning. With a fully funded project, my students will be exposed to non-fiction through magazine articles, reader’s theater scripts, comprehension task cards, and small group lessons. All of these activities are high-interest for first graders.
