Klein, a Polish woman who survived the atrocities of the Holocaust, provides students with a unique perspective that they would otherwise not be exposed to. From her experiences recorded in the memoir, to the passion in which she tells her story, students will have the opportunity to explore and understand the power of communicating with the written word. At the young age of fifteen, Klein began six long years of forced labor by the Nazi's, experiencing fear, friendship, love, loss, hunger, pain, misery and victory in the most horrific environment imaginable. In spite of her suffering, she was able to not only record her experiences, but to educate and influence subsequent generations of readers around the world. During our reading of the memoir students will study the themes such as bearing witness, sustaining hope, and the choice of morality.
