In order to ensure that our school's 7th grade reading curriculum is more inclusive, our reading team intends to add a book that is written by a Latinx author: Before We Were Free by Julia Alvarez. This year, scholars will be reading The Giver, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, American Born Chinese, A Raisin in the Sun, and Lord of the Flies. While these are all amazing books, we would like to add a book that is more representative of a large portion of our community, as it is powerful for scholars to read about people and communities they can relate to. Our reading team wants to be able to provide a book for scholars by a Latinx(a) author, but our school is unable to provide the funds at this time. With these new books, my students will be able to connect to an author and text that is both grade level and accessible for all scholars, and culturally relevant. If you are able to donate even $1 - $3, it will push our team closer to our goal. Thank you for supporting our scholars!
