Having a school/fire safe rug area will provide students with an additional work/maker space to engage in problem solving activities using the engineer design process,. Floor space will enable students to use a variety of hands on materials and tools. Having a carpet area within the classroom also provides learners with a gathering space to share goals and ideas, successes and failures. A gathering space is an important component in the elementary classroom to receive instruction while limiting distraction. Students at each grade level will utilize this space. The ultimate goal of this alternate work and learning space is to improve student achievement.
