Mo Willems is an excellent choice for young readers. His books are funny and engaging. I like to use these books for various reasons. I will use them for whole group shared reading and in the classroom library. These books are great for teaching cause and effect, sequencing, and especially making inferences. In the classroom library, students will have the opportunity to read familiar texts that are appropriate for young readers. Students can retell and/or read the books alone or with a friend. The Gerald and Piggy books are excellent books for reading with a friend. One student reads all of the Gerald lines and the other all of the Piggy lines. My students love doing this!
