I have attended professional development (on my own dime) pretty much every year of my 31 years of teaching. The NCTE conference is one of the best I have attended because I get to sit in on and participate in five different sessions a day. These are taught by classroom teachers who recognize the desire to go back to school right after the conference and USE the information immediately. I get to choose what areas are of interest to me and there is a huge variety, Without a doubt I leave the conferences with 3 to 5 new techniques to use in my classroom. It is never a waste of my time--and one of the few professional development opportunities that will get me to leave my students for a couple days.
