Sensory toys and flexible seating will allow my students to feel a level of self-advocacy and safety in our classroom. They will be able to make the choices that they believe are best for their individual learning styles and needs. Currently, students are able to choose areas of the classroom where they would like to work (different desks, tables, couches/chairs with clipboards). However, many of them benefit from having something extra (sensory toys, different types of chairs) to help keep them stay focused on their learning! Social emotional learning is also a big component of the learning that occurs in our classroom. My students are working very hard on regulating their emotions. These items will give students more freedom to make choices to help themselves regulate their emotions. They will help them advocate for their needs when they are feeling angry, sad, frustrated, over-stimulated, or just need a break. These items will benefit student academic, social, and emotional learning! I have seen the benefits of giving my students the ability to choose and to speak up for what they need. I hope with these additions to our classroom, they will grow even more!
