Within our district, 72% of households with school children are financially struggling. Adults in those homes are overwhelmed as they spend their day attempting to meet basic needs of survival and suffering from the physical, emotional, and mental health effects of scarcity. It is up to the school and community to help those kids overcome obstacles related to poverty. My part in helping the under-privileged youth of my community with special needs is to teach them strategies and provide them with the tools that can help them regulate their bodies and minds. Alternative seating, such as wobble stools and comfortable seating, are a couple of researched-based tools students can use to become successful in school and beyond, helping to overcome the effects of poverty and special needs.
