Finding the "perfect working spot" can be a difficult task for a third grader when the only options are theirdesks or on the floor. As a first year teacher, I am building up my collection of flexible seating options to give my students choice over where they learn best in the classroom. Right now we are limited to desks and two bean bag chairs in the classroom library. Students need options to where they can work within the classroom. Many adults do not work all day sitting down at a desk, and my students will not work that way when they leave school and enter the workforce. By giving my students choice over where they learn best, I helping my students take ownership over their own learning. My students need a variety of seating options including wobble chairs, balance balls, and floor cushions. My students will be excited to choose seating options as they work independently and in small groups in our classroom. Research in education has proven fantastic results from classrooms with open seating options for their students. I know my students will benefit as well, and I can't wait to see their excitement and engagement increase with our new seating options.
