The Forensic Science I course starts with the importance of making accurate and thorough observations and the phenomenon of Locard’s Principle of Exchange, which holds that a perpetrator of a crime will inevitably leave something behind, i.e. the evidence. This particular project addresses both evidence found at a crime scene and the steps of crime scene investigation, in other words, the systematic observation, documentation, and collection of such evidence. These concepts weave throughout the physical and biological topics covered in the remainder of the course. Thus, the purpose of the project is to have the students identify, collect, and document evidence using the 7 steps of crime scene investigation, all while minimizing contamination of evidence. The tools purchased will be used by the students as they perform specific steps of crime scene investigation. They will use the tape to secure the scene. They will utilize the measuring devices in pictures they take to document the scene. They will make a realistic sketch of the crime scene using the sketching tool, and finally, they will use the evidence collecting materials to secure and collect evidence.
