This year we will be diving head first into lectura libre, or free reading, three times a week! With this project I hope to expand my class library to include a greater variety of titles, which will allow me to better accommodate the myriad of proficiency levels in my classes. I hope to provide more readers (short novels) that are designed for language learners, including a glossary in the back and a low unique word count. Having these readers in a variety of different language levels give my non-natives choice to read something that's interesting to them that they can also understand. And while we don't have a separate class to tailor to the specific needs of heritage language-learners, I know that through free reading I can provide them a greater challenge and give them an opportunity to push themselves while enjoying a good book. Many of my students complain that they "hate reading", but I know that it's just because they have yet to find the right book! I want my students to feel firsthand the power of reading for enjoyment, not reading to analyze, write essays, and answer comprehension questions. In addition to my goal of transforming my students into bibliophiles, I also am always sure to stress to them the importance of why we read in a language class: to acquire language. Reading is the most powerful tool to move our learners up the proficiency scale. It helps to write more fluently, expand vocabulary, improve spelling, learn where to place accents, acquire different verb tenses, and just generally expand a reader's mental representation of the language! How awesome that reading does all that, plus opens a window into places you never could have imagined!
