How do you learn best? By exploring, discovering, and relating information to things that you already know. This grant will allow my students to construct their own reading and writing abilities in a child-friendly way filled with colorful visual experiences. My classroom would thrive in numerous ways if we had a color printer. My kindergarteners are just beginning to learn to write, and I allow them to illustrate what they choose to write about. Young children love to draw out their thoughts and use their pictures to express their emotions. My students are creative and it would be wonderful to be able to expand their creativity using technology in our own classroom. Having a color printer at my students' fingertips would provide them with 21st century skills, allowing them the ability to utilize basic technology skills to produce digital writing. Picture books have quality words but most importantly, they have engaging pictures that are full of detail which engage young readers and give them a better understanding of what the text is actually about. My main goal of this project is to provide my students with a safe and enjoyable writing environment where they feel it is okay to make mistakes and still know they can become authors, even in Kindergarten. I plan to do this by giving my students the opportunity to create illustrations and text through digital resources. The color printer will be a wonderful asset to our classroom because students would then be able to write, illustrate, and print their books and then publish them in our classroom library.
