I teach seven sections of classroom piano. Currently, our school district is virtual, due to the pandemic. It has been really difficult to get students excited and engaged in learning without proper instruments. Because our school district is more than 50% economically challenged, most of my students are not able to provide their own keyboard. Students will perform on an 88-key Steinway at the end of the school year, and desperately need equipment in order to begin developing their pianistic skills. So far, students have been able to collaborate on creative projects with international themes and have been able to study and learn music theory with online apps. With home access to a keyboard, the students will be able to learn hand and finger placement, and develop a tactile sense of how to play the piano.
