Students will get to learn all about erosion and deposition through a completely hands-on experience with this stream table. As part of the earth science curriculum, the 9th grade students will learn what erosion and deposition are, how streams are affected by these processes, and why they are important to understand. The project will also be repeated for many years to come, benefiting more students each year. Erosion is a powerful force of nature. With the use of this stream table, students will get to experiment with different scenarios to see how rates of erosion are changed. They will then exercise their engineering and problem solving skills to design an erosion control plan and test it on the stream table. Finally, they will learn about real-world problems with erosion as well as solutions that have been implemented. This will also tie in nicely to introducing potential future careers. This project will run the course of many school days. They will be introduced to a concept, get to experience it and process it first-hand, get to apply the concept to a critical thinking challenge, and then learn the importance of it in the real world. Many of my students thrive in a hands-on learning environment, and this stream table will provide that learning experience for them!
