I am asking for a class set of owl pellet kits. This activity will help my class learn about ecosystems, trophic levels, food chains and webs, predators and prey, and keystone species. They will have the opportunity to observe first hand the delicate balance of an ecosystem. By dissecting owl pellets students will answer the following questions: What is the role of consumers in food webs and chains? What role do owls play in trophic levels? How is energy transferred? Learning comes alive through this hands-on science experience! Students can find out quite a bit about an owl's lifestyle through careful examination of the pellet's contents. Since most of the prey's bones are not actually broken during the attack and the subsequent digestion process, they can be readily identified in the pellet. I can't wait to give my students an experience I remember having when I was a fifth grader, and remember with such excitement!
