Being online last year with my students made meeting our music standards involving playing instruments a challenge. We were creative and used household items to replace unpitched percussion instruments like drums and shakers, but pitched instruments were not as easily replicated. As we have returned to the music classroom this year we are still unable to play some of our pitched instruments due to masking and sanitation guidelines. This project would fund a class set of ukuleles for my 3rd grade students, providing every student with a pitched instrument in their hands. Learning to play the ukulele will grow my students' ability to read music, addressing music standard MU:Pr5.1.3. It will also allow students to play in an ensemble setting, giving them the opportunity to make music together, addressing standard MU:Pr6.3. But even more important, learning ukulele will give my students a much needed feeling of pride and accomplishment.
