As with many schools, all of our students are issued a technology device to use for learning in school. Just providing students with devices does not guarantee that learning will occur. As the librarian, I use very carefully curated books and technologies to help me create learning that is engaging and meaningful. Nearpod lessons meet my strict criteria. The use of Nearpod virtual reality lessons, allow my students to feel "immersed" in the environment they are learning about without leaving our library. Nearpod lessons with icebreakers and end of the year activities help make it easy for me to build classroom community. When using technology as an instructional tool, it is very important to me to be sure that students are using their devices respectfully and responsibly. One of my favorite groups of lessons on Nearpod is the Common Sense Media Digital Citizenship lessons. Although these lessons are available for free online, they do require some teacher prep. The use of the Nearpod created lessons helps me teach the lessons in an efficient and engaging way. With Nearpod, each student is able to use their device to follow along and respond and I get real-time feedback. Everyone is involved! Another benefit of Nearpod is that Ithe students and I can create our own Nearpod content. Students can create presentations that incorporate Nearpod questions and activities. Nearpod is so versatile that students can create and administer Nearpod Homework lessons to study for a test. Whether using already made lessons or creating my own, Nearpod is one technology that gets an A+ from this picky librarian.
