The district curriculum I am currently using with my 8th graders is rigorous and full of informational text and heavy vocabulary. While there is nothing wrong about this, I struggle to find opportunities for my students to see themselves reflected in the materials they are reading. There is very little diversity in either the informational text or the fiction that is included. I have access to novels we can do as read alongs, but these also have very little diversity. I'm trying to get enough copies of the novel, Ghost Boys, to use as a guided reading opportunity for my kids. This novel fits what I am looking for because it is socially current and includes students from many backgrounds existing together, just like my students.
