I teach in a small community in Oklahoma. Through history classes and some Classic Literature, students learn about our country's past and current struggles of racism and prejudices. While my school has many class sets of Classic Literature, we do not have the funds to purchase engaging Young Adult Literature (YAL). Studies have shown that YAL offers students an engaging and meaningful opportunity to apply critical thinking skills to more current texts. The novel, DreamLand Burning, by Jennifer Latham, offers a glimpse into our own state's dark history with the Tulsa Race Riots. Through the reading, analyzing, and activities based off of this novel, my students will learn not only about their own state's history, but also themselves. This novel touches on a dark past and a current issue in today's society and will create opportunities to reflect and discuss racism and prejudices in the United States.
