My students are discovering that they have the power to identify real problems in the community. Even better, they are realizing their own abilities to design and implement solutions that have far-reaching, permanent effects. In doing so, they reach out to local businesses and organizations to better understand the problems they are solving and the impact that solutions can have on the people they serve. Rather than ask for services from their community partners, my students ask "What can we do for you?" In order to do so, my students need to understand how real organizations in the real world operate. By creating a small business geared toward marketing their own services, my students can advertise their organization to the school, neighborhood, and local community. Additionally, learning business will further advance their understanding of how the community operates systemically.
