Flexible seating provides students the chance to pick a place that fits their work style. An extensive amount of time and energy is put into determining how students learn best, but many more advances are required in the classroom to meet the needs of these diverse learners. One way to meet these needs is to give students more autonomy in their classroom environment. Currently, students are able to choose to work in different areas of the room (i.e. traditional tables/desks, the bench, on the floor, etc.) and I am adding a much needed option: standing desks, with the choice to sit on a high stool. Students are noticeably more focused and engaged on class activities when they have a comfortable work environment. As can be seen in the picture of my classroom, there is a large structural pole that prevents the usage of the back quarter of the room. I am currently building four custom standing desks that will surround the pole, leaving this as usable space (finally!). The stools selected will give students a quick option to change their stance from standing to leaning to sitting without causing a disruption in their, or others', learning. I have seen how choice can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
