Students no longer sit at a desk using paper and pencil all day long. Students need to be able to work cooperatively with a variety of materials and mediums in ways that are comfortable for each individual learning style. Flexible seating will allow my students to move freely, sit comfortably, and work with a variety of classmates, especially in my overcrowded classroom. With the doorbell, I can bring my students back together quickly and efficiently, redirect and allow them to get back to the task at hand. I am looking for positive ways to increase engagement and focus across my required curriculum. Dry erase boards make for noticeable improvement in student attention and on-task behavior, especially in math. I can easily identify those struggling to complete a problem, and assist students in a making a correction much easier than trying to read anything done the old school route. Learning math facts also takes on a lot more meaning when students are engaged in a colorful game with their peers. Most importantly, I want my students' work to accurately depict how they see themselves and provide them the opportunity to create work that is reflective of our classroom and today's world. Having more than a few colors in their 24-box of crayons is a choice I want to be able to provide.
