I am a teacher at ESJES. We are a vibrant community with very few economic resources. My proposed project is aimed at reinforcing the students' self worth and enhancing pride in the community, a place publicly cited for crime, violence and drug use. The project will highlight people that enrich the lives in the San Jose neighborhood. We will do it through an integrated approach of conducting oral histories, reading, writing, and creating art. A series of nine billboards will be the artistic representation of the oral histories of the featured community members. After each of the nine classes conducts an oral history, the students will create paintings in tribute to this person on pellon cloth which will be adhered to sheets of wood (27 feet by 4 feet). The glossy gel medium will be used to adhere the pellon to the wooden boards and to coat the art for protection against the sun. The wooden plaques will be inserted into pre-existing metal frames at the school site. The student art will highlight the creativity of our students, pay homage to our community members and bring positive visibility to our school. The students will engage in the domains of oral, verbal, reading and writing language skills, which are particularly important in a community of second language learners. They will also feel empowered by participating in a meaningful art experience that enhance the visibility of their community.
