My students are the hardworking kids of KIPP Academy in NYC. They hail from striving families in the South Bronx, one of the most under-resourced areas in the US. Their day begins at 7:20 am and ends at 5 pm everyday and continues with an average of 3 hours of homework every night. Many come from schools that did not emphasize science or were not taught it at all. Nevertheless, in 5th-7th grade our students 'catch up' so as to be ready to take high school level science, the NYS Regents Earth Science, in 8th grade. Each of the last 3 years we have passed a higher percent of students in Earth Science than most public high schools in New York City! However much our students improve on tests we know there are so many experiential gaps our kids missed earlier in their education. Therefore, the common thread of the projects on this page is using powerful, enriching tools to create a potent learning experience.
