Students need headphones for the Reading Plus program that we use in my class. The assessment portion gives audio directions, which helps struggling readers understand the directions, since they struggle with reading and they need this audio support. They also need audio support in reading higher level texts. Sometimes we read articles that are higher than their reading levels, so they need to audio support to help them comprehend the article better. Audio support helps struggling readers not only comprehend better, but also builds fluency. Once they have good fluency, they can focus on comprehension. Audio support is an essential part of helping struggling readers.
