Reading comprehension continues to challenge my students for whom I provide literacy intervention in small, separate group settings daily. My students, who come from low socioeconomic backgrounds in NYC, struggle with memory challenges, learning disabilities and language impairments. This makes learning on a day-to-day basis feel laborious and exhausting. My K & 1st grade students are at a point where they need to build the foundation of knowledge and skills they will eventually require for learning to read. However, the lack of age appropriate or accessible literature that is available to them either in their classrooms or at home has been an added struggle to their success in literacy. By providing my students with language rich experiences at school through read alouds and other innovative, progressive methods, they will develop a natural and organic interest in learning to read that manifests itself in positive results and progress in literacy aptitude.
