As an Elementary School Counselor, I provide support in all areas: academics, social, and emotional. Support is given in whole group lessons, peer groups, and individual sessions. Many of the class lessons are geared to tackle subjects and topics that can help students stay on target and develop lasting relationships with peers; while the peer groups focus on targeted areas identified by myself, parents, or other school officials. However, there is a gap in providing a complete space dedicated to addressing emotional health of students. Yes, many of my elementary students face difficult challenges mentally, emotionally, physically, and societal; that to be honest can not be simply addressed in class or sessions. Creating a safe, and calming space in the office, and or their classrooms, that will give students an outlet to work through many of their feelings and emotions through play therapy and sensory touch, can be beneficial in helping reduce distractions to learning. Through the use of tactile items, sand therapy, and other sensory items, students are given an opportunity to calm down before the issues are addressed. Even as the counselor, I must admit having a space to calm down helps me too! Help me to help my students overcome emotional barriers that are impeding academic success!! Thanks!
