I was inspired to do this project when I complimented one of my fellow summer camp instructors on her tie dye shirt. I was surprised when she told that she had made it in elementary school, and I knew instantly that I wanted to create shirts with my students this school year. With these supplies we can design our own shirts in a fun and unique way. Tie dying shirts is an exciting hands-on activity that yields a product the students can wear to build a sense of community. I teach at a school with both English and bilingual classes in each grade. One of our goals this year is to create more opportunities for our students to interact with each other as a grade level. For the third-grade team we want to do monthly activities for all three classes to do together, and this will be the first one. We will have a big tie dye party, and then we can all wear our shirts on the same days to create a sense of third grade pride and unity. The tie dye activity will be an exercise of color and creativity, in addition to following instructions and working as a team. I’m looking forward to big reveal, when the students get to see how their shirts turned out, and I hope it is something they will cherish for years to come.
