In our corner of the country, the number of indoor recesses has increased dramatically the past two years, and all predictions for this coming winter point to more of the same. When the gym is not available for gross motor play, and each day dawns cold as the day before, both students and teachers grow weary of hearing those words, "Indoor recess!" from the office intercom. Our district's large annual STEM convention fell to budget cuts this past year. What could be more fun during indoor recess than the equal-opportunity challenges science, technology, engineering and math provide? These project items will give a solid, engaging boost in support of our state's math and science learning standards, as well as foster student imagination, engagement, and understanding. With the absence of after-school activities, students would have the opportunity to also practice social skills and forge friendships over these chosen STEM-related interactive projects. My students and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your donation! For them to see the generosity of strangers would be a wonderful example of mindfulness and community.
