The students in my classroom have reading abilities ranging from kindergarten to 11th grade. As a first year teacher, I want to build a library that has diverse, multi-faceted characters with positive messages and different perspectives. With these books, my students will be practicing their language arts skills, sharing their opinions with one another via reviews and book talks, learning about the world, and reading for enjoyment! My goal is to provide a worldview that is inclusive, reflective, and promotes critical thinking. Not only do I want my class to learn about narratives that are different than theirs, but also I want to give them the tools to amplify their voices to stand up for good. I believe books can give students the courage and connection to do so.
