The mentor texts I have selected already have a home and a distinct purpose in my classroom. Every day, we have time set aside for me to read a book aloud to the students. This has quickly become a favorite part of the day for my students as they love to be read to. My students will also utilize these quality texts throughout the year in small group skill practice. These books play an integral role in our daily schedule and will be used time and time again for both reading and writing. My students are noticeably more engaged when the lessons and activities involve books they are all familiar with. I have seen how a picture book read aloud positively affects my students' understanding and engagement, and I know that all of these titles will do just that.
