Learning to read is about listening and understanding as well as working out what is printed on a page. Through hearing stories, my students are exposed to a wide range of words used in context. This helps them build their own vocabulary and improve their understanding when they listen, which is vital as they start to read. Ultimately, the listening center will be used daily with my students to enhance word exposure, improve vocabulary, build background knowledge, remove printed word decoding anxiety, increase comprehension, and develop grade-level appropriate content knowledge. My students will have access to a listening center with all the needed parts to set up for their use. Organized in a mobile cart, the listening center will free-stand in an area in the classroom with flexible seating for the students' comfort and listening enjoyment. Student will have the opportunity to listen to a variety of fiction and non-fiction stories on CD's with a copy of the book for the students to follow along as the narrator reads.
