I believe in teaching music that is culturally relevant to students. By teaching music that students can connect to students are more likely to become lifelong musicians. No instrument has made a a greater impact on music in the past 100 years than the electric guitar. By teaching students using electric guitars they connect the music in the classroom to the music in their headphones. It makes them understand that the music that they listen to is worthy of academic study. These two guitars will not build a modern band program in my classroom, but they are a first step toward that program.
