Imagine walking into a classroom where students are immersed in exciting sword fights, visiting faraway lands where the animals speak to humans, and getting up close and personal with scientists who study insects. The teacher is just there as a facilitator to help students use the words on the page to deepen their understanding of the world beyond the four walls. Every day, my students take these adventures and so much more by getting lost in a book of their choosing. We begin every morning with a mini-lesson to set our focus for reading. Then students are set forth to use this new tidbit of information to increase their comprehension, vocabulary, and overall understanding. The more books they read, the more experiences they have. They will learn tolerance, forgiveness, and patience. They will laugh, cry, and experience what life could be like outside of their small world.
