As a teacher, I recently learned about “windows and mirrors.” It was such an a-ha moment for me! The idea is that students learn the most when they read a mix of “window” books that let them see into experiences that are different from their own, and “mirror” books, that reflect their own experience and help them study it more closely. Learning about this made me take a good, hard look at my classroom library and I realized that for some students the library was filled mostly with windows while for others it was pretty much all mirrors. I want to supplement my library with high-quality books that will enable every student to experience both windows and mirrors. I believe that this will help students develop essential comprehension skills such as envisioning and perspective-taking, and it will make sure that all students feel represented in the books they read in school. Please help me improve the quality of my classroom library by adding books that feature under-represented perspectives! There are lots super curious 2nd graders who will thank you!
