Our spirited Firsties are active learners who will benefit greatly by having a variety of flexible seating choices in our classrooms. Flexible Seating will not only allow our students to make choices in their learning environment but it will allow them to have movement breaks because first graders are busy workers! In addition, having flexible seating will allow our students to wobble and rock while stimulating blood flow and staying focused. Our goal is to create student-centered classrooms where students can take ownership in learning. These flexible seating choices will encourage students to take responsibility in choosing a seat that will help them learn best. We are teaching our students to make these decisions at a young age and our hope is that they will carry these skills with them them through their education. Imagine walking into a traditional classroom and seeing every student sitting in a chair at a desk. That type of seating works for some but not for all. Now, imagine walking into a classroom with flexible seating. You would see some kids standing at tables, some rocking in chairs on the floor, some wobbling in chairs at the table. To someone who is not in education it may look like chaos but to an educator what you would see is engagement! Flexible seating encourages collaboration and communication. Our students must share and take care of their seating while also being mindful of their peers' needs. What is fantastic for the students is that it is also fun and exciting! Students are engaged, focused, and comfortable. They are able to do their best work while being their best!
