Students learn best when they are actually doing something. Action provides the opportunity for them to apply knowledge and demonstrate their understanding. In the music room, learning how to play an instrument like ukuleles, is the culmination of the different musical concepts that are taught (rhythm, musical notation, pitch). It also provides a gratifying, enjoyable experience as students often are playing an instrument for the first time. Often, their confidence increases and helps them to take healthy risks in other areas of their lives. Learning how to play an instrument also simultaneously engages different cognitive areas as students "read" music, maintain a steady beat, and perform correct technique.
