Coming from a community and teaching at different schools with temperature control, and having days where it has broken down, I know how important the surrounding physical environment can effect one's learning. How can someone really focus on Algebra when they are sweating and are dehydrated from just sitting in the room? Also a group of 20+ smelly and sweaty junior high students in a hot room is never ever a good thing... The school and students have really tried to do their best with their learning everyday despite the not ideal conditions. Giving these students at least some breathing room and space in my classroom would be best so I can provide a safe and comfortable workspace where they aren't crammed in. The classroom is a nice size, but with the current set up of having 26 desks (the size of my largest class), the space is tight and there isn't much room for out of seat activities and for students to access their lockers or books. Freeing up all the desks and replacing it with tables and chairs allows students to have more work space in front of them for activities and projects, encourages collaboration with each other, and is friendly for lefties, not just righties like the current desks. As a new teacher to this school I want nothing but the best for them to help them succeed. Giving my students the best possible environment will no doubt improve their academic achievement and growth.
