Reading circles are important to my classes, and while our media center does have many classroom sets of novels, outside of The Hunger Games and Divergent, our library offers few examples of dystopian literature. My first unit is on social structures. Because dystopian literature introduces them to foreign worlds, it is a great way to encourage students to consider how social structures work. I would like for students analyze the dystopian novels for how social structures maintain order and encourage beliefs. They will trace the various effects of these social structures on the protagonist and how the protagonist work with and against them. These books, along with others we have in the library, will be read in small reading circles. Students will work with peers to compare their analyses.
