Every day my students walk in the classroom door from many different homes. Some may have a home or apartment but others stay in hotels, cars, or between family and friends couches. Then when the students walk into class they must leave their belongings stacked in the front of the class. For most of the kids their desk is the first place that has been "theirs". A place to hang their coat and backpack would be another space these kids would have to demonstrate that they do matter and we do care. I am amazed everyday by how inquisitive and excited about learning these kids are. I want to make sure that my classroom is a place they feel that they belong and have a place of their own.
