Bright young people, here, who live in pockets of deep poverty and community strife are often in classes where most of the attention goes to the most disruptive students. Where struggling students damage books because they are difficult to read. Where "differentiated instruction" has to be done without resources. Most of my students read many grade levels below their own. Some, in every class, are able to read independently at grade level or above. They devour every book I lend them and beg for more. These three books, especially, capture my students' hearts and change their outlook on their own humanity and efficacy in their community and beyond. I would love to be able to set up small "Book Clubs" in each class so students could read the same titles and share their observations and questions with each other while I'm helping struggling readers with the regular work that the more advanced students have finished. They help their peers but deserve a richer experience.
