We live in a fast-paced, high stress world and sadly, school can sometimes feel that way for our kids too. Our students have so much to navigate on a day to day basis; school work + grades, peer relationships, and anything that may be going on at home. I want students to learn to listen to their bodies, notice emotions as they feel them and be equipped to respond. I think it is important to create a space for students to feel safe in, and while that has always been a priority in my classroom I have a corner in my room that I want to transform into our Calm Corner. I chose a blue rug with big waves on it to create our calming space because what is more soothing than hearing waves at the beach? When students step onto this blue rug, my hope is that they are able to take a moment to breath deeply, use the resources available, and realize they have the power within themselves shift attitudes and emotions.
