When you are a student who struggles with reading, silent reading time can be the most dreaded part of the day. Every day, most classrooms incorporate silent reading, read alouds, and/or partner reading. Often, my students with reading deficits are 1-3 years below grade level in reading. During independent reading time, they refuse to pick books on their reading level because they are so beneath their interest level. Can you imagine being in 5th grade and needing to read about "Bob the Cat"? Reading becomes lost instructional time for them- they can be seen 'pretend reading': flipping through the pages, looking at pictures, and then quickly grabbing a new book. With the use of CD players and audiobooks, students will be able to access books that interest them, while increasing their reading comprehension abilities. By being able to access grade-level books, despite their reading level, reading will no longer be feared!
