This year, I will be teaching an elective course for high school students that is based on a blend of both Sociology and Psychology. As part of the course, we will look inward, evaluating our own internal biases related to race and gender. Beyond introspection, we will examine the concepts in popular culture. In doing so, I hope to create a classroom library filled with young adult novels related to the concepts. As part of the curriculum, students will participate in literature circles. Through those literature circles, students will be given the opportunity to truly interact with characters and identities with which they are unfamiliar, and often, uninformed. Each week, students will then participate in open and honest small group discussions related to their revelations related to the topics. Through this process, it is my hope to create a classroom environment in which students feel accepted and appreciated, and that those practices of acceptance and empathy become lifelong skills of these learners!
