Students will explore different ways someone can verify whether an object is made of gold or not. One of the experiments we will do is a conductivity test where students will learn about what kinds of substances are able to conduct electricity and what kinds of substances will not. They will also learn about what is it about these objects that allows them to conduct electricity. In their final summative assessment, students will have to explain using a number of different methods whether something is made of gold or not. By providing them conductivity testers, we will give students the opportunity to demonstrate and to teach the community how to figure out the authenticity of gold. They will present this information to an audience and will have to explain the chemistry behind why certain methods in determining the authenticity of gold are better than others.
