I have a class of students with moderate to severe disabilities Grades TK - Grade 5. The majority of my students have autism along with other disabilities (speech, fine and gross motor, hearing loss). I have 23 boys and one girl. Many of my students have sensory issues - they have a hard time with loud sounds, lighting, sitting different surfaces (chairs, carpet, etc.). In addition, we need multiple fidgets to help us get through the day. Sitting in a chair is sometimes difficult. They need the opportunity to use alternative seating to help them be able to sit still and attend to the tasks at hand. Our class currently has chairs set up at each center where the students rotate through throughout the day. These chairs are set at a height to fit the table, not the individual students using them. Feet dangle from the seats, they squirm in their seats trying to get comfortable. By contributing to our project, you will hope contribute to our students success by helping increase student attention and focus. They will have alternative seating to help meet their unique needs. We can use approved covers on our lights to keep the ultra violet / artificial lighting at an appropriate level for the students. we can have the freedom to have students sit on the carpet to do work using a tilt board. Our students will have tools which will help them succeed in the classroom. Help me, help them!
